Treating children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases and their families
The College of Dental Medicine at Roseman University of Health Sciences today celebrates the opening of a new dental clinic providing specialized and compassionate dental care to children undergoing treatment for life-threatening conditions, including childhood cancer, blood disorders, and rheumatological diseases, and their families.
The clinic is located at Roseman’s Summerlin campus, which also houses Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, an independent division of the university providing comprehensive outpatient care to children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. With Cure 4 The Kids and the Roseman Dental clinic together, they are the first non-profit, community-based service in Nevada to provide integrated medical and oral health care for children with complex medical conditions.
“Most people are aware of common side effects of cancer treatment like nausea and hair loss, but few know that most cancer patients, as well as patients being treated for other rare disorders, develop problems in the mouth, which may interfere with treatment and lessen the quality of life,” said Roseman University College of Dental Medicine Dean Dr. Frank Licari. “Roseman Dental aims to provide onsite quality dental care to children in treatment.”
Cure 4 The Kids Foundation CEO Annette Logan-Parker says, “The Roseman Dental clinic will be the dental home for many Cure 4 The Kids patients, their siblings, and other immediate family members. Providing services to the patient’s immediate family will ensure that the family’s dental healthcare needs are met, enabling them to focus on the treatment and care of their child with cancer.”
The Roseman Dental clinic will offer preventative dental care including cleanings and X-rays, composite restorations (fillings), pulp therapy, children’s crowns, dental extraction, and sedation dentistry. The clinic will also offer orthodontic screenings with referral for treatment at the Roseman Dental & Orthodontics clinic in Henderson.
Along with the opening of the clinic, Roseman University has established the Smile 4 The Kids patient assistance fund to bridge the financial gap of urgently needed and highly specialized oral healthcare for patients who are unable to afford needed care.
