Downtown Summerlin®, the dynamic urban center of the Summerlin® master planned community, will host two events Earth Day weekend to formally mark the occasion, while promoting overall wellness.

Student Farmers Market – Friday, April 19

On Friday, April 19, Downtown Summerlin hosts a giant Student Farmers Market organized by Green Our Planet, a local nonprofit that helps schools valley-wide plant and operate teaching gardens. Considered the country’s largest student market, the free event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and features produce from gardens at 55 schools throughout Southern Nevada. More than 500 student farmers will be on hand to sell school-grown fruits, herbs, vegetables, and crafts to the public, with all proceeds going directly to participating school garden programs.

During the growing process, students also learn how to run their own businesses and create a school-garden-based business plan. At the Giant Farmers Markets, they’re matched with bankers who coach them through customer service and negotiation as they sell their garden-grown fruits and vegetables to the community.

In Summerlin, Green Our Planet is actively involved in assisting several community schools with their gardens funded by Howard Hughes.

Giant Student Farmers Market, taking place April 19th on the Lawn.

Tour de Summerlin, Saturday, April 20

Tour de Summerlin®, Southern Nevada’s longest running cycling event, returns to the community on Saturday, April 20. Presented by Howard Hughes, Tour de Summerlin is expected to draw more than 500 cyclists.

Now celebrating its 22nd year, Tour de Summerlin offers three distances: 80-mile; 40-mile and a 20-mile ride for all skill levels with start times beginning at 7:00am. While registration is now closed, spectators are invited to enjoy the launch of hundreds of cyclists from The Lawn at Downtown Summerlin.

According to Danielle Bisterfeldt, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Consumer Experience for Summerlin, Tour de Summerlin was originally developed to showcase the community’s beauty while giving cyclists scenic routes that include Summerlin’s actively selling new home neighborhoods, as well as stunning views of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to the west.  As an untimed event, the goal of Tour de Summerlin is to promote health, outdoor enjoyment, and safe cycling practices, she said.

Tour de Summerlin, taking place April 20th.

Now in its 34th year of development, Summerlin offers more amenities than any other Southern Nevada community. These include 300-plus parks of all sizes; 200-plus miles of interconnected trails; resident-exclusive community centers; ten golf courses; 26 public, private and charter schools; a public library and performing arts center; Summerlin Hospital Medical Center; houses of worship representing a dozen different faiths; office parks; neighborhood shopping centers; and, of course, Downtown Summerlin®, offering fashion, dining, entertainment, Red Rock Resort, Class-A office buildings, City National Arena, home of the Vegas Golden Knights National Hockey League practice facility, and Las Vegas Ballpark®, a world-class Triple-A baseball stadium and home of the Las Vegas Aviators®.

In total, Summerlin currently offers nearly 100 floorplans in approximately 20 neighborhoods throughout nine distinct villages and districts. Homes, built by many of the nation’s top homebuilders, are available in a variety of styles – from single-family homes to townhomes, priced from the mid-$400,000s to more than $1 million. Bonanno’s New York Pizza Kitchen has been a staple in Vegas for over a decade. They craft Artisanal New York Style Pizza by blending old world secrets, New York technique and modern technology for a pizza experience like no other.

The local eatery is now open in its new location — across from the street from its old one on Festival Plaza Drive next to Beer Zombies.

Here to share a little about the menu, must-try favorites and all things family and food is Robb Bonanno.

Q: Congrats on the new location! What can guests expect at your new spot at DTS?

Thank you very much! We are excited to bring our Pizza Kitchen concept to DTS.  Our new location has a fresh look and over 50 seats with indoor and patio dining options.  Guests will still enjoy the same pizza they’ve come to love, but now can indulge in our expanded menu.  So much more than a pizzeria- we have appetizers, entrée salads, Italian entrees, pasta, sandwiches, and my daughter’s favorite- fresh to order, hand-breaded chicken tenders. Not to mention our traditional homemade Italian desserts!  Beyond stopping in for a slice, we are now able to accommodate larger parties and a quick casual spot for lunch, dinner or just a snack

Q: Let’s talk pizza. What’s makes Bonanno’s so special?

We start with the best ingredients and then it comes down to research, development, and science.  We think of our test kitchens almost like a chemistry lab.  We have spent over a decade perfecting our dough.  You’d be surprised how a slight change in the density, rest time of the dough, temperature, flour type, yeast, ratio of ingredients etc. can affect the crust.  We also take environmental factors like humidity, altitude, water, alkalinity and hardness into account. Pair that with the right type of mixers and ovens and you’ve got one heck of a science experiment!  At the end of the day, Americas favorite food is pizza, and we take tremendous pride in giving our guests the best; otherwise, we wouldn’t put our name on it!

Q: This is a family owned and operated business, correct? What generation are we on?

We currently have two generations of family in the business. Both generations founded this brand together and still operate it today. I believe it was 2006 when my father, Frank, and I sat in the MGM Grand Food Court and started conceptualizing our first pizzeria which opened there in 2008. Now we have the pleasure of working with my sisters, Maria and Giovanna, who both joined us in the company over the last few years.

Q: Why DTS for the newest, expanded location of the brand?  We love DTS, our family resides in the area and while DTS has many dining options to choose from, an East coast style family pizzeria appeals to everyone.  Since 2015 we have operated Trattoria Reggiano across the street so when an opening came up to move the pizzeria into a bigger location, it seemed like a great opportunity to create a more exciting offering for local families to enjoy and it would also allow us to expand Trattoria Reggiano into the old space with a new private dining area and an upcoming refresh.

Q: Let’s talk sauce. Why is the Ciao tomato sauce so coveted? Ciao tomato sauce is like an ancient secret. We sought out and imported Ciao specifically because of its rich flavor and alkalinity. It has a very specific PH level that is said to come from the ash of ancient volcanoes that shadow the fields on which the tomatoes are grown today. We love the story and the sauce is no joke.

Q: Bonanno’s is the sister restaurant to Trattoria Reggiano, also located at DTS. Do the two share menu ideas and inspirations? We have always shared creativity and inspiration between these two brands and several others we own, but we certainly allow each to be unique on their own.  With the separate entities, guests looking for great Italian food have the choice of a quicker, more casual experience or a more upscale fine dining option.

Q: Favorite part about having not one but two restaurants at DTS? Probably the fact that you just asked that question is my favorite part… Honestly, we always felt we had two restaurants, but when they share a space, it is difficult for one to not overshadow the other. Now we feel that by separating them, we can make each special in its own way!

Q: If not in the mood for pizza, what other top selling menu items would you recommend? I am so glad you asked, but honestly, I am always in the mood for pizza, especially with a drizzle of Mike’s hot honey and our garlic knot sauce on the crust. However, my non-pizza favorites would be the Eggplant Parmesan sandwich, the Gorgonzola Chicken Salad and the fresh hand breaded chicken tenders. Something else that is unique is an East Coast sandwich from our home state of New Jersey. We aptly named it the “Jersey” and it is my father’s favorite item. eggs, mozzarella, and bell peppers on a hoagie roll… try adding sausage and onions too.

Crested Canyon by Taylor Morrison, a single-family home neighborhood, is nearing sell-out with only a few homes remaining. Located in the Kestrel district of Summerlin West, just west of the 215 and Lake Mead Drive and south of the village of Reverence, available Crested Canyon homes span 2,242 square feet, priced from the mid-$700,000s.

According to Jenni Pevoto, Senior Director of Master Planned Community Marketing for Summerlin, Taylor Morrison is one of nine national homebuilders in the community that has built and delivered beautifully designed homes in Summerlin for decades, ever evolving their home designs to meet the changing needs of today’s modern families.

“Crested Canyon reflects the demand for homes with open floorplans, flex spaces and smaller footprints that mean less maintenance for homeowners and a heightened sense of experiential living,” said Pevoto. “Add to that a Summerlin address that includes the community’s abundant amenities, proximity to parks, trails, schools, and of course, Downtown Summerlin®, and it’s easy to see why neighborhoods like Crested Canyon are so popular.”

Remaining homes feature the Cedar Plus three-story floorplan that offer four bedrooms, two-and-one-half baths, and two-car garage.

The district of Kestrel is situated on an exquisite expanse of elevated land west of the 215 Beltway, offering vistas from select vantage points throughout the area. The district is designed to offer walkable connectivity between neighborhoods and open spaces, including carefully planned pedestrian access to future neighborhood services and community parks. Six parks and paseos are under active planning and development in the area and scheduled for completion this year through 2025.  The area’s adjacency to the 215 Beltway makes it easy and convenient to get just about anywhere in the valley.

As the first community in Southern Nevada to incorporate roundabouts into its street plan, the master planned community of Summerlin® recognized the circular junction’s proven safety, environmental, and traffic flow benefits. By design, roundabouts are known to reduce the number of auto collisions like those that occur at traditional intersections. They improve traffic flow by keeping it moving without the stops and starts of intersections, and they eliminate idling at intersections which reduces automobile emissions.

Today, Summerlin land planners will incorporate another novel approach to transportation via an urban trail design to expand access for cyclists and pedestrians connecting them to a future planned urban center in Summerlin West. An emerging trend nationwide, ‘complete street’ design accommodates multi-modal transportation in a more integrated and safer manner.

According to Julie Cleaver, Senior Vice President, Commercial and Residential Planning for Summerlin, the urban trail was developed from several focus groups conducted with mountain bikers, serious cyclists, and casual riders.

“To ensure we created an inclusive experience along the roadway for all cyclists regardless of their level, we enlisted their various inputs to really make this a community effort,” said Cleaver. “Our design was guided by sensitivity to the potential conflict between casual riders, cars, and pedestrians. By incorporating a complete street design approach, we are able to safely accommodate all users.”

“For more efficient circulation in the planned commercial area west of the Summerlin Parkway interchange with the I-215 bypass, we have designed a dedicated bike lane that’s part of the streetscape,” Cleaver continued. “This allows the bike lane to be separated from motor vehicles and creates a safer experience for the cyclists. The urban trail will be located in the heart of the urban core and connects to other bike trails that lead the surrounding neighborhoods.”

Cleaver explained that this new design also includes a generous landscape strip to provide shade and separation between cyclists and pedestrians and enhanced street lighting and signage to ensure everyone is aware of the directional flow.

Tour de Summerlin®, Southern Nevada’s longest running cycling event, returns to the community on Saturday, April 20. Presented by Howard Hughes, developer of Summerlin and Downtown Summerlin®, Tour de Summerlin is expected to draw more than 500 cyclists.

Now celebrating its 22nd year, Tour de Summerlin offers three distances: 80-mile; 40-mile and a 20-mile ride for all skill levels with start times beginning at 7:00am. All bike types are permitted, including e-bikes. All registered participants will receive a t-shirt and medal. To register, visit  www.tourdesummerlin.com . Registration fee is $115 per person. Children under the age of 15 may participate in the 20-mile ride with an accompanying adult for a fee of $20.

According to Danielle Bisterfeldt, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Consumer Experience for Summerlin, Tour de Summerlin was originally developed to showcase the community’s beauty while giving cyclists scenic routes that include Summerlin’s actively selling new home neighborhoods as well as stunning views of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to the west.  As an untimed event, the goal of Tour de Summerlin is to promote health, outdoor enjoyment and safe cycling practices, she said.

“Whether you’re a hard-core rider or just enjoy getting out on the bike, each route offers plenty of bike lanes, beautiful scenery and unique riding experiences,” said Bisterfeldt. “Summerlin has long been synonymous with cycling given its proximity to Red Rock Canyon and the community’s 200-mile trail system. Even our newest office building, 1700 Pavilion, and our newest luxury apartment building, Tanager Echo – both at Downtown Summerlin, feature bike storage to promote sustainable commuting options like cycling to work. Tour de Summerlin is a natural for our community, and we are looking forward to welcoming cyclists from across the valley for this fun event that has become a signature for our community.”

Now in its 34th year of development, Summerlin offers more amenities than any other Southern Nevada community. Along with that, I am still as obsessed with our quality products, energized by the team members who I get to work alongside and inspired by our personal development offerings.

Q: Favorite part about working at the DTS Summerlin location?

Krislyn: I had the honor of supporting Amy to open the Downtown Summerlin lululemon location back in 2014 (our location will be #10 this year)! This store offers the best of the best when it comes to locations in Las Vegas; from the community of humans who shop with us weekly, to the high caliber events that draw new guests from around the valley. Let’s be real, Downtown Summerlin has it all. I can take a workout class to start my day, swing by Trader Joe’s to grab dinner ingredients or create a family fun Sunday with all that DTS has to offer.

Q: What makes lululemon worth the splurge? EMILY

Emily: Quality is the heart of who we are – it shows up in our people, in our conversations, and of course – in our products! We stand behind the products we make, and we love building connections while educating and empowering our guests!

Q: Hottest product for the spring season?

Shaila: Okay, we’re excited for this one. Are you ready?!

Later this month we are launching our first performance shoe designed for both women and men. It is our new BEYONDFEEL – designed for the runner, or walker, wanting a more cushioned experience. The premium cushioning of the Beyondfeel midsole, smooth liner of the upper, and confident traction of the outsole, give runners their most cushioned and comfortable run yet.

Q: Where’s your go-to to dine at DTS?

Amy: A core value of mine is fun which includes weekly date nights with my husband. We love to visit La Neta Cocina y Lounge when we are in the mood for tacos and fresh guacamole – add in a Tito’s on the rocks with some orange and let the fun begin.

Q: Best piece of advice for someone looking to invest in a killer pair of leggings?

Paula: The best piece of advice I could give you if you are looking to invest in a killer pair of leggings is, don’t walk – but run to our location for a fit session with one of our pant experts. Our team is eagerly waiting to share with you our array of pant fabrics and fits to have you leave with a pair that work best for your sweaty endeavor. Next time you are in, ask to try on a pair of pants in our Nulu fabric – the buttery soft fabric is perfect to feel confident and comfortable.

Q: Top secret about the company or DTS location many might not know?

Emily: lululemon offers both men and women’s shoes! We launched our shoes in March 2022 and our DTS location can boast that we were the top selling store in the company. Since then, our excitement and love for our shoes has continued to grow as our footwear offerings continue to expand and evolve. The best part? We offer a 30-day wear on all our shoes. If they don’t work for you – bring them back and we’ll help you out!

My favorite secret about our store is that we add fresh items to our markdown section every Wednesday evening giving our guest early access to items that are not yet marked down companywide!

Q: March is Women’s History Month. What woman has inspired you the most?

Shaila: The woman in my life who I want to honor is my stepmom, Dr. Leslie Faulkner-Rose.

She is the epitome of “age is only a number”, becoming a registered nurse while raising two children. Continuing her education, she received her Ph.D., leading to her working with both New Orleans, LA and Baton Rouge, LA DEA. And now as a grandmother of five and great-grandmother of one, she’s getting ready to pursue her medical doctorate degree.

She is such an unstoppable force, and she does it all with grace, wearing the crowns of nurturer, support-system and giver of big-belly laughs.
